chair, armchair, bench, stool
这些名词均有“椅子”或“凳子”之意。
chair : 通常指带有靠背的椅子,有时也指有靠背有扶手的椅子。
He pulled up a chair.(他拖过一把椅子。)
小编注:chair作为动词讲,还有主持的意思。
例如:Will you chair the meeting or shall I?(由你还是由我来主持会议?)
armchair : 指有扶手的椅子。
I love curling up in an armchair with a good book.(我爱在扶手椅上蜷作一团看我喜欢的书。)
bench : 指可供两人或更多人坐的长凳或石凳,多置于公园或划艇中。
He saw a girl sitting on a bench against the railings.(他看见一位姑娘坐在靠近围栏的板凳上。)
小编注:在美式英语中, bench也可表示“把场上队员换下”或“因犯规而罚场上队员出场”。
例如:The fullback was benched with injuries.(后卫因受伤被换下场。)
stool : 多指方的或圆的无靠背无扶手一人坐的凳子。
He perched on a tall stool by the bar.(他坐在吧台前的高凳子上。)
