BEIJING, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- The number of China's highway passengers hit 74.68 million on Sunday, the second day of the National Day holiday, up 9.9 percent from a year ago, the Ministry of Transport said.
The overall traffic is kept in order without stranded passengers, said He Jianzhong, the ministry's spokesperson.
Passenger flows in most parts of the country are stable, except the southernmost island province of Hainan and other coastal areas where the typhoons Nesat and Nalgae kept tourists away, He said.
A total of 840,000 coaches are in service across the country to deal with the flood of tourists during the week-long holiday that started Saturday.
The ministry on Friday expected at least 530 million passenger trips will be made during the National Day holiday, which is also dubbed the "Golden Week".
In addition, the ministry estimated about 1.53 million passengers traveled by water on Sunday, an increase of 46.3 percent from that of Saturday, and is up 18 percent from a year ago.
