　　In the movie “Legends of the Fall”, when asked by a farm worker about the purpose of his daughter’s education, the colonel says, “To live a richer life.” “Richer” can be interpreted as contribution to the society or the fulfillment of individual ambitions, which coincides withthe two opinions in the topic statement. However, this essay tends to agree with neither.

　　Individual contributions made to the society, because of education, can be reasonably doubted. It is only natural that education imparts knowledge into learners, who will in the future build and make progress in their careers to benefit the society. Contrastively, there are individuals who abuse their education and harm the society with their anti-social behaviours, white-collar crimes and job-related crimes are no longer news to ears.

　　Similarly, it is also in question that education facilitates individual ambitions. Admittedly, a good education will equip learners with necessary knowledge to pursue aspirations in a certain field. However, reality sometimes is in the way. Due to such personal reasons as family backgrounds, character and other factors as absurd as luck, education alone just cannot land individuals where they want to be.

　　Moreover, the two ideas in question, when compared with the founding purpose of education, are merely personal choices. Education, by its definition, conveys knowledge to learners, and that is all there should be to education. It is within reason and right for individual learners to apply their knowledge in a way they see fit—they could willfully break law or choose to learn somethingfor no apparent reason. It is certain individuals or biased public opinions that attach certain “strings” to education, which in essence has nothing to do with education.

　　In sum, the purpose of education is knowledge dissemination, and it is the learners’ choice to benefit their society or fulfill personal purposes.
